Langtang National Park
Langtang National Park is Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park, located closest to Kathmandu. The park covers an area of 1710 sq km with an additional 420 sq km buffer zone. It is situated in the Central Himalayan region, encompassing districts in the southern mountainous terrains of the Nepal-China border.
Established in 1976, the park features a wide altitudinal range from 1,000 m to 7,245 m at Langtang Lirung. The park is home to diverse plant and animal life and people with rich cultural values.
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi: Starting Point
The road from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi is about 80 kilometers long. Syabrubesi is a village northwest of Nepal’s capital city. It’s a starting point for people who want to go trekking in Langtang National Park. The village is 2,380 meters above sea level and can be reached by road from Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Chitwan.
The road from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi has both smooth parts and bumpy parts. It takes about 7-8 hours to drive the 80 kilometers.

These buses depart daily from Kathmandu’s Gongabu Bus Park or Machha Pokhari stations between 6:30 am and 9 am. The journey takes about 7-8 hours due to the winding and poorly maintained roads, with an expected arrival time around 4 pm.
Private Vehicle

Booking a jeep through a travel agency or with other travelers can make it more affordable. It takes about 5 hours by private jeep, much faster than the crowded local buses. If you’re willing to pay more for extra space, faster travel, and the chance to see mountain views, a private jeep is a good choice for going to Syabrubesi.

Low Altitude and Short Treks in Langtang Region
Langtang Valley is a short and low-altitude trek in Nepal and the Langtang region. However, the trekkers must not be complacent, mistaking it for the easy trek in Nepal. The Langtang Valley trek is shorter and does not have to climb very high altitudes compared to other treks in Nepal, like Everest Base Camp Trek.
The duration of the Langtang Valley Trek extends from 7 to 10 days. Among those days, you will spend 6 to 8 days trekking, and the rest will be spent just traveling from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and returning.
The highest altitude of this trek is still over 4500m, which is on par with Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek, and others. Although you will still have the possibility of altitude sickness, this trek is easier because you will only spend about two days at the high altitude.
Langtang After the 2015 Earthquake
After the catastrophic natural disaster, not many places, villages, or even luxurious cities recover for many, many years. However, Langtang region or, more specifically, Langtang Village. After a massive earthquake and avalanche wiped out the entire village, the local authorities, communities, Nepal Government, Nepal Tourism Board, and the public joined forces to rebuild the village after the earthquake. The rebuilding of Langtang Village began right away. When the second earthquake struck, local survivors had already been helped, and the temporary camps were safer.
Life was difficult, but it started with finding shelter in temporary housing. External support was just a rumor because the Langtang Lirung avalanche destroyed the routes to Langtang Villages. However, the local people quickly took charge of their survival. They built several temporary camps using stones and timber and cleared the debris for the settlement. Months later, Langtang village received support from national and international volunteers. Since then, homes, hotels, and gompas have been rebuilt. There are now schools, clinics, and a new community center where villagers can gather.

After the earthquake, it seemed normalcy began, but the people of Langtang Village were not prepared for what was coming. About 300 people died in the natural disaster, but most of all, the entire village was wiped out.

Accommodation of Langtang Valley Trek
For any trekking expedition, knowing about the accommodation facilities beforehand is essential. It would be best to have a suitable place to rest after a long, hard day of trekking. In the city areas like Kathmandu and towns like Syabrubesi, you can book either luxury hotels or budgeted lodges. They have more services and facilities than the remote accommodation facilities, so you must stay at a higher altitude.
During the Langtang Valley trek, you must climb high altitudes and pass through remote trails and villages. In these villages, the trekkers won’t find luxury hotels; instead, they must stay in the teahouses. These small and wide teahouses have twin beds, so you must share them with other trekkers. Only if you are a single female during the expedition will you be given a single room for the overnight stay. They provide plenty of blankets, bedsheets, pillows, etc., to make it more comfortable so you get warm and cozy.
Furthermore, during your teahouse stay, you will stay in rooms with attached bathrooms, which means you must share with other trekkers. The teahouses provide essential common services, but if you want extra services like a hot bath, internet, and WIFI facilities, you may have to pay extra. Meals & Drinking water
It’s essential to have access to warm, healthy food and comfortable hotels for a safe and enjoyable trip. If you enjoy food, the Langtang Valley Trek offers the chance to experience traditional Nepalese cuisine with special spices. The menu is the same for all stops from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa and is determined by the local trekking committee. First, let’s look at the food options in Langtang, and then we’ll explore the accommodations available in the Langtang Valley. Regarding food, the trekkers will have Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it is the first one. When you wake up early in the morning and prepare for the trek ahead, it is important to eat your breakfast so that you will have enough energy. The initial part of the trek is also the time to cover more distance during the day, so if you don’t have energy, then it might not be possible. Hence, we recommend not skipping breakfast during your trek. Some of the breakfast menus you will have during your trek are Tibetan Bread, Jam and Toast, Roti, Chapati, Eggs, pancakes, porridge, hot soups, etc.
Lunch
You will leave the teahouse in the morning, and the initial portion of the day will be spent trekking. After trekking for about 4-5 hours, a guide will take you to the appropriate places for lunch. For lunch, we recommend you eat meals rich in proteins and carbohydrates. The most common menu for lunch is the local Nepali dish Dal, Bhat, and Tarkari, which means Rice, Lentils, and Vegetable curry. There are other options for lunch, such as Pizzas, Spaghetti, fried rice, pasta, burgers, dumplings etc.
Dinner
The last meal of the day is dinner. After reaching another teahouse in the evening, you will rest briefly and have dinner around 7 PM. When staying at the Hotels of Langtang Valley Trek, dinner must be eaten at the hotel where you spend the night. The dinner options are similar to those mentioned for lunch. Additionally, there are dessert options such as chocolate cake, apple pie, rice pudding, chocolate pudding, apple fritter, and more.
Drinks

This permit will cost you around 30 USD per person and last for the duration of the trek. Similarly, a Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card is also required for trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas. It will cost you 20 USD per person when applied in a group.
Where To Issue
You can get both from Kathmandu’s Nepal Tourism Board head office.
Total Distance Covered During the Trek
The Langtang Trek covers a distance of about 195 kilometers. The journey includes both driving and trekking. The drive spans about 140 kilometers from Kathmandu to Syaprubeshi, while the trekking distance is around 65 kilometers. Despite the relatively short walking distance of 65 kilometers for the Langtang Valley Trek, the trail’s uphill and downhill terrain can be quite challenging.
Many factors affect the trek distance, including physical exertion, uphill and downhill sections, slope angles, terrain, and altitude. The continuous uphill and downhill sections and landslide areas along the Langtang Trek make the short distance more demanding for trekkers. The rugged terrain and navigating through landslide areas slow down the walking speed, extending the time needed to cover the distance.
Difficulty Factor Of Langtang Valley Trek
The difficulty level of Langtang Valley Trek ranges from easy to moderate. This trek can be easy for veteran and experienced trekkers, but certain factors increase the trek’s difficulty if you are a beginner. Here are some of the factors that increase the trek difficulty.
High Altitude
The high altitude is a major factor affecting the difficulty of treks in the Langtang region. During this trek, you will be trekking above the altitude of 5000m, which means there is a constant risk of altitude sickness. The symptoms of altitude sickness are nausea, fever, headache, Khubmu cough, shortness of breath etc. The one common way to prevent the high-altitude trek is to acclimatize properly and keep yourself hydrated all the time.
Rough trails
The rough trails are another major difficulty that the trekkers face during the Langtang Valley Trek. You will pass through several rough peaks and valleys, through lower altitudes, to the glacial moraines and the snowy peaks. Even when you are trekking in the ideal trekking season, the trails are rough, but if you decide to trek in the off-season, the challenge doubles.
Physical and Mental challenges
During the trek, you would walk 60 to 80 kilometers, averaging 6 to 7 hours of hiking daily. The terrain can be challenging with steep climbs, areas difficult to walk due to landslides, and ups and downs along the trail. This can be physically demanding. However, the mental stress of trekking in remote places, including fears of getting sick, not reaching the top, and getting lost in the wilderness, can be even more challenging.
Dynamic Weather
Another major challenge, especially at high altitudes, is the dynamic weather. The weather changes completely, so even if you are trekking on sunny summer days, it suddenly changes to black rain clouds and sometimes extreme snowfall. These sudden weather changes can halt the flow of the trek and sometimes can even block your path completely.
Best time to Visit Langtang Valley Trek
August
August is the best time to trek the Langtang Valley. For the Himalayan adventure, you want to be trekking in the chilly weather, and the views of the mountains are clear. The August season is perfect for the stunning trek in the Langtang Valley. The season begins in September and ends in November. The early part of September does receive rainfall as it falls in the post-monsoon season. The weather and temperature of this season are appropriate for the treks in Nepal. During the August season, the flowering trails are replaced with green and brown amber leaves, which change the hue of the surroundings to golden in color, especially during sunrise and sunset.
Off Seasons
Since there is a best trekking season for the ideal trekking conditions during your Langtang Valley Trek, certain trekking seasons are not well conditioned for trekking in the high altitude trek. These seasons are called the off-seasons.
In Nepal, the off seasons are monsoon season and winter season. So, let’s get into them.
Monsoon Season
The monsoon season falls during the off-season in Nepal. This season starts from June to August. The initial days of June begin with the summer season, but as the days progress, the region will suffer from heavy to mild rainfall. The monsoon region affects the trek trails as they become slippery and wet. Furthermore, the monsoons also infest the trails, forests, and jungles with mosquitoes and insects.
Winter Season
Another off-season for trekking the Langtang Valley Trek is the Winter season. The major difficulty of trekking in the winter season is that the weather is extremely dynamic, and the temperature is extremely cold, which impacts the trekkers. However, if you want views of the stunning mountains covered with snow, the winter season still appeals to people.
Travel Insurance for Langtang Valley Trek
Travel Insurance is not compulsory for the Langtang Valley Trek; however, it is important if you don’t want to endure the additional medical expenses. During the Langtang Valley trek, you can suffer the expenses that you might be prepared for may not have.
Some of the additional expenses that you can incur during your high-altitude trek are:
- Medical Expenses
- Helicopter Rescue
- Trip Cancellation
- Flight Accident
- Medical insurance
- Lost luggage
- Other losses incurred while traveling.
Keep in mind all these expenses incur significant money. For example, helicopter rescue alone costs about $5000, and unless the amount is paid, the rescue process will not commence. So make sure your travel insurance covers these expenses before booking your trek.
While booking travel insurance, make sure that the travel insurance won’t pay for some conditions. These are the conditions when travel insurance doesn’t pay for your expenses.
- Expenses caused by the negligence
- Expenses caused by drug abuse.
- Very expensive jewelry and personal items above the valuation maintained by the insurance company,
- Last-minute cancellation of the trek due to fear of travel.
- Pre-existing medical conditions that you have disclosed and not disclosed.
- Any activities that insinuate acts of terrorism.
Electricity & Internet Availability
Electricity and Internet are available throughout the Langtang Valley trek. Both NTC and Ncell sim cards operate for most parts of the trail. Electricity is usually solar-powered; you might have to pay extra for charging your devices in some places. You can access Wi-Fi at tea houses along the trail for about USD 2 or USD. However, the reliability of the Wi-Fi varies depending on the altitude.
It’s more dependable at lower altitudes, and you might not have to pay for it there. Look for a sign that says “Free Wi-Fi” to find tea houses that offer the service at no cost. Keep in mind that the Wi-Fi connection might be slow due to overcrowding. You can use Wi-Fi for about 90% of the trek. A mobile network is available until Kyanjin Gompa; you’ll need a local sim card. The two options are Ncell and NTC sim, with Ncell offering better coverage. You can buy 1 GB of data for around 10 USD, which can be used wherever the network is available in the country.
Electricity is available all over the Langtang Valley. Electricity is constantly available at lower altitudes, especially in towns and cities. Since the connection is to the national grid, there is no problem with electricity. In the higher area of the Langtang Valley Trek, the electricity panels are surrounded by solar panels that provide a constant supply of electricity.
